Physical description
Waka Huia or feather box a large box of rectangular form with a full length, lift off lid.
The lid has ornately carved (traces of which remain) with one end (and of the box below) carved into representation of a human face.
The box obviously had a dark brown finish originally - patches of which are still visible.
Unfortunately large areas of the box have been exposed and the outside edges heavily corroded worn away, removing carving and finish and reducing the thickness of the wood considerably.
Carved in Wairoa about 1840 using metal tools, found in Maori grave on Karikari Peninsula.
